Popular Substrates

Extira Composite - Extira is a beautful wood composite board from which stunning sandblasted signs are fabricated. A sealed press, steam-injected process creates a panel board that is one solid piece.  Wood fibers from otherwise harmful forest remnants are bonded with other ingredients under heat and pressure, combined with phenolic resins for moisture resistance, and treated with zinc borate, an EPA-registered wood preservative, which provides additional protection from rot and termites.

Cedar - Cedar is a great sign building material because of its natural resistance to bugs and rot. Cedar is easily sandblasted and the resulting signs can last many years. The downside is that cedar is a natural product and no matter how much care is used in the fabrication of the cedar sign the wood is still (eventually) subject to decay. Cedar is also becoming harder to come by.

HDU (High Density Urethane) - HDU is a popular choice of substrate for sandblasted signs today.  It is impervious to insects and rot and unaffected by temperature changes. Unlike cedar, HDU is readily available, is stable, carves easily, and paints beautifully.  It also looks very similar to wood when painted.
